Growing up, we have a lot of family gatherings. You know the kind where you get together with your grandparents, uncles, aunts that you never knew were related to you, and of course, COUSINS! Hello, Cousins! Any occasion as an excuse my family can think of, we gather around food, more food and of course videoke. I was still in my diapers when I was first handed a mic on one of those gatherings. Cute that I was, as my mommyger says, I was a bit shy starting a song. Although I had a lot of practice, I've never really gotten beyond my stage shyness. Now that I think of it, I was not really suffering from stage fright, just the initial shyness, coz, honey, once I got my groove, bring it on! If I was destined for this, then I dare say my formal training at the Center for Pop Music Philippines reinforced that fate. There I met no less than the CPMC Founder, Mr. Butch Albaracin. He trained my mom before she began singing professionally in top bars and hotels years ago. Yeah, like mother like daughter, we both love singing, guys. I so love going to those training sessions to learn from my coaches Ms. Gherns Calina and VJ Abner. So I had three coaches now, including my first coach, my mom. Coach Gherns and Coach Abner are both performing professionally now.
While many of my classmates were enjoying dance and love songs, I sang songs they don't know, hahaha, like contemporary gospel music. I don't know, something between the lines of a gospel song are messages tugging at my heartstrings. Relate lang talaga, like that. I'm sure relate din kayo. Some of them were “I Am Blessed / My Fathers Heart” by Rachel Lampa, “Stuck On You” by Stacie Oricco and “ Jesus Take the Wheel” by Carrie Underwood.
More than our stage in CPMP, I enjoy performing in actual music bars and malls. Preparing for these gigs is a wonderful opportunity to collaborate and learn with other industry pros, and creative musical souls like me, hehehe. True learning, I think is living the experience of the nerves and chills, then the minute of calm and brainstorming, then back to the instruments and mic again to hear the sounds of music our collective thoughts put together. Gaining more experience, and age, hahaha, I enjoy hanging out at home with former classmates and friends for KTV nights. In these past few years the music of Alicia Keys, Fergie, Chaka Khan, Christina Aguilera and Rihanna were a fave on my playlist. Tagalog songs and OPM did not really appeal to me that much until.... Oh well, I'll write about it in my next blog. Nice sharing with you, guys! Until next blogpost.
